Aeroplane (A) to Helicopter (H) Conversion
For those of you who have previous Aeroplane experience there is a reduction in the required hours for gaining a helicopter license. You will enjoy the conversion from Aeroplane and find it quite demanding, the following are the flying hour requirements:
- PPL(A) to PPL(H) requires 38 hours of flight training
- PPL(A) to CPL(H) requires 70 hours of flight training
- CPL(A) to CPL(H) requires 60 hours of flight training
Please note that flight times are the minimum required by the Civil Aviation Authority, and individual requirements may vary from pilot to pilot.
Conversion of overseas license
As a general rule, pilots seeking to convert a foreign license to an Australian flight crew license must pass a Flight Rules and Air Law written examinations and a flight test as well as obtain an Australian medical certificate. The conversion of a rating, such as for instrument or night flying, usually involves an additional exam and/or flight test. The examinations/tests mentioned must be completed with a person/persons approved by CASA. This means that tests can only be conducted in Australia.
Conversion exams helicopter
CPL
A holder of a valid foreign CPL license that has been issued by an ICAO Contracting State, may convert this license to an Australian CPL by passing the CPL Flight Rules & Air Law exam for the relevant aircraft category (either CLWA or CLWH) and passing a flight test.
ATPL
A holder of a valid foreign ATPL license that has been issued by an ICAO Contracting State, may convert this license to an Australian ATPL. The conversion requires passes in both the CPL Flight Rules & Air Law exam for the relevant aircraft category (either CLWA or CLWH) and the ATPL Air Law exam (AALW). The candidate must pass the CPL exam before attempting the ATPL exam.
Note: It is also a requirement to hold a multi engine command instrument rating for the issue of an ATP(A)L. This requires a pass in the IREX exam and the instrument rating flight test.
PPL - PHOS (Private Helicopter Over Seas)
The exams for conversion of an overseas private pilot license (Aeroplane and helicopter) are conducted through flying schools.
